5 Years In Prison Jayson Williams
Former NBA star Jayson Williams has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for the 2002 accidental shooting death of his limo driver Costas Christofi. Jayson will be eligible for parole in 18 months. During the sentencing, Christofi’s sisters asked for the maximum sentence without parole and said Jayson never apologized to their family for killing Chris.
Just as she did during the trial, Tanya Williams sat behind her estranged husband. Williams had filed for divorce last year, but has attended his recent court appearances. After the hearing, she admitted not being surprised that Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman had given the full term outlined in the plea deal, although it still hit her hard.
“I’m numb,” she said. “My children don’t even know yet.”
During the sentencing hearing, a letter written by Andrea Adams, the victim’s sister, was read during by a court employee that the punishment “didn’t fit the crime” and spoke of going through “eight years of agony watching Jayson Williams prance around and live his life and acting like nothing happened.”
As Williams apologized to his family, some in the audience cried.
