It’ll be tough to top Adam Lambert, last week’s mentor and one of the best in recent memory — but pegging Alicia Keys to tutor the ‘Idol’ contenders during Inspirational Songs Week seems like a great choice, especially since she’ll be performing on ‘Idol Gives Back’ Wednesday night.
As for the aspiring ‘Idols’ themselves, all season long it’s been (bad) song selection and (lack of) performance skills that have made this group less engaging than aspiring ‘Idols’ past. All of them wasted opportunities, as Lambert pointed out, to really make a mark with Elvis tunes last week, so here’s hoping that Inspirational Song week will actually, you know, inspire them to show viewers they’re capable of more.
PS – A list of the songs the Top 7 can choose from this week is available at iTunes. Which prompts this plea to all the contestants: No Whitney, no ‘Greatest Love of All.’ No ‘I Will Survive.’ No chest-thumping Celine Dion impersonations with ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ No ‘We Are the Champions,’ unless Tuesday night’s performance show is taking place during a Lakers game. And please … please! … no ‘That’s What Friends Are For.’
